First in Canada

Dam good. In paper.

Dam Good White and Dam Good Red were the first wines in Canada to come in a paper bottle: a shell made from recycled paperboard that's fully recyclable, five times lighter than glass and doesn't shatter when the cooler tips over.

The tobacco kiln trick

Norfolk County is old tobacco country, and its retired kilns turned out to be perfect for drying grapes. Our sister label Smoke & Gamble started the experiment, and Norfolk appassimento grew out of it.

A note from Tech Loop

Why we built this concept for Frisky Beaver

A 4.6 from 281 Google reviews, 4,400 followers on Instagram, Canada's first paper wine bottle and some of the best wine names in Ontario, on a site where every Buy Online button leads to a page that doesn't exist. People find you on their phones on the way back from the beach. The site should get them to the bar or the cart in one tap.

What we found on friskybeaver.ca

  • All ten "Buy … Online" buttons on the wines page land on a "404 Not Found" page in your new online store, and the Shop link in the menu opens dover13.ca, a separate page you have to click through again
  • No phone number on the homepage and no tap-to-call link on any page. Your contact page and Google say 450-BEAVER-1; the fundraising page and dover13.ca still print 519-900-3034
  • The top menu has three links. The club, events, groups and fundraising pages are only linked from the footer
  • "People are talking…" tops out at a July 2020 Double Gold; the other stories are from 2017 and 2018
  • The club lives on friskywineclub.com, the shop on smokegamble-friskybeaver.com and the news on a WordPress blog. Counting dover13.ca, that's five web addresses to keep in sync

What this concept changes

  • Every wine on one page with its price and a Shop button that goes straight to that bottle in your current store
  • Shop and 450-BEAVER-1 in the header, plus a sticky Call and Shop bar on phones
  • Today's hours worked out automatically from your five seasonal schedules
  • Group and bachelorette bookings with your rules built in: before 2 pm, the minimums, 50 max
  • The paper bottle, the tobacco kilns, events, the club, fundraising and merch in one place, in your voice

What's included

  • This concept was free. The full site is one fixed price: design, build and launch on friskybeaver.ca
  • Your Shopify store stays exactly as it is; the site sends people into it, and old links like our-wines.html redirect so nothing breaks
  • Built from your own photos: the bottles, the patio, the kilns, the crew (the images here are placeholders)
  • Hours and events you can update yourself, with hosting and updates for the first year
  • Google Business Profile tidy-up: seasonal hours, photos, shop link

Design cues from the best in your field

Before drawing this we studied Liquid Death, the canned-water brand that became one of the most talked-about drinks companies in North America by being funny on purpose. Their site puts uppercase product names on big colour blocks with a price and a buy button on every card, keeps the jokes going even in the boring parts, treats a free fan club and merch as part of the brand, and turns a sustainability fact (aluminum instead of plastic) into the punchline. You already have the names, the jokes and a paper bottle. This concept gives them the same stage.
